Happy DECEMBER! As insane as it sounds, there are only 30 days left in 2017! If that isn’t crazy talk, I dont know what is.
It’s been quite a year, hasn’t it?
I’m sure you all remember this time last year, right? The nation had just gone through a completely draining presidential election and was dealing with all the emotional fallout — hard to believe it’s been an entire year since then. To be perfectly honest, I can’t say I was super optimistic about 2017 at the time, but THANKFULLY the year has had its share of highlights.
This year we moved from an apartment to our beautiful house, gotten more connected within our church, took a lovely road trip up to Montreal (first time in Canada for me!), housed my older brother for a month before he moved to South Africa, and made a LOT of memories with friends and family.
I love feeling settled in our home, and I very much look forward to the coming months and years. It’s nice to feel that sense of permanency! We are excited to continue putting down roots and connecting with our community.
Among other things, it’s also been a year of FIRSTS — we hosted our very first Lobster Bake, bought patio furniture for the first time ever, each launched our first business ventures, and in just a couple weeks we’ll be celebrating our first DECADE of marriage! That’s right folks, our 10 year anniversary is coming up and I don’t feel old at all. 🙂
Now that we’re approaching the wintery season, I’m finding myself cuddled up in blankets on the couch about 110% of the time. It’s so nice to get snuggly in warm blankets while reading a book or watching a movie. This blanket from Target is my current favorite… super soft, cozy, and warm! I’ve washed it a few times and it has held up perfectly. It TOTALLY fits the “hygge” vibe. This incredibly cozy *Sherpa Throw Luxury Blanket from Amazon would make an absolutely perfect Christmas gift! I LOVE the grey!!
Guys, look! Our fresh flowers plus grass from the back yard are still going strong over here! I am super impressed with how they have held up over the past week and a half. I didn’t do anything special with the water except to add the packet of “flower food” that came with the bouquet. I added a little bit of water to the vase yesterday (no idea if that helps, but since I was watering all our other plants I went ahead and added a bit of water to the vase too!). Over the past few days a couple of petals have dropped and a couple leaves are looking a tiny bit crispy, but otherwise it still looks pretty great. I love how it looks on the breakfast table! It really brightens up the room. I always feel like these mixes of flowers last so much longer than roses. Love it!
Of course when these die I will probably go back to displaying my faux orchids (I have real orchids too but they aren’t currently blooming — the faux ones are ALWAYS in bloom!) These *Handmade Silk Orchids are similar…and even though they aren’t real, they sure do last longer than the real ones and they add so much elegance to any room!
Are you still working on your thanksgiving leftovers? We’ve finished off a lot of our leftovers at this point, but we still have some random lingering food… There are only a few more mandazis left (remember my sister-in-law and I made Kenyan snacks similar to beignets). These take me back to my childhood, I used to love munching on them growing up! They are great with tea, chai, or coffee, or just by themselves 🙂 I remember drinking chai with my friends in high school and enjoying a couple mandazis as a mid-morning snack. Good times! My girlfriends and I from highschool get together every year and I’m hosting our next reunion (end of May) here in Connecticut — I might need to whip up some mandazis for the occasion!
I would like to know your thoughts on chocolate glazed donuts from Dunkin Donuts. Any fans? I can’t say I like them — but I sure do love the regular glazed ones. Joel was out running errands yesterday and texted me to ask if I wanted donuts. Who could say no to THAT? 🙂 He brought back a couple glazed donuts plus this random chocolate one. I decided to give it a fair chance to win my heart… but no luck. I mean, it’s not terrible, but not great. Just kinda “meh”.
Who likes watching food or cooking shows? I have enjoyed my share of food network, but over the past couple weeks I have found myself OBSESSED with the Bizarre Foods show! It’s one of those shows that has been around for years but I never thought to check it out until now. Anyone else out there love watching this? Some of the dishes are so weird (um who wants to eat fried testicles!??) but I love how they always tie in cultural context and historical background. Learning the cultural significance of a dish makes it so interesting! I feel like I learn so much about food and PEOPLE — it is kinda like being in a fascinating class that combines cooking, history, and anthropology!
Speaking of shows, I am in the hunt for my next binge-worthy show! I am between shows at the moment. My most recent fave was Alias Grace — LOVED it! There were only like 4 episodes and I watched them all over the weekend while I was sick and couch-bound. I wish there were more episodes. I tried Mindhunter because I heard it was awesome, but for some reason I just couldn’t get into it. However, like everyone else on the planet I could not get enough of Stranger Things! I’m usually not a “scary” genre person but I have fallen in love with Stranger Things and Walking Dead. But you know what, at the moment I’d say that my ultimate favorite show is THIS IS US!!! I am eagerly awaiting the next installment. But until then, I am in need of the a good show to reel me in. Recommendations needed!!!
Anyway, I hope your December is off to a STELLAR start and that your year is wrapping up nicely. I’m still trying to get used to the idea that 2018 is right around the corner!
Got any binge-worthy shows to recommend? What are your biggest or most favorite memories from 2017?
